Shenzhen has shown a vibrant development in the coffee and tea industry in recent years. In terms of the coffee market, Shenzhen is not only the city with the largest number of coffee-related enterprises in China, but also has the youngest consumer group in China and the urban area with the highest coffee density in the country, showing great potential for the development of the coffee industry. According to the 2022 data, Shenzhen has 9,651 coffee-related enterprises, which is among the highest number of major cities in China, making it the “City of Coffee” in the country.

According to Statista, in 2022, there are about 138,000 freshly ground coffee shops in China, of which about 32% are franchised chains. The penetration rate of chain coffee shops is expected to reach 34% by 2027.

In terms of the tea industry, Shenzhen, as a global bellwether in the tea industry, has successfully organised a number of tea industry expositions to promote the development of tea culture and the tea industry.

South China has shown a clear upward trend and diversified market demand in the development of the tea drinks industry. According to China Tea Drinks Industry Annual Development Report 2023-2024, China's new Chinese tea drinks market reached 193.3 billion yuan in 2023, a year-on-year growth of 15.7%, and is expected to approach 250 billion yuan by 2025. The chain rate of the tea drinks industry in the catering industry will reach 51.6% by 2024. Shenzhen, as an important city in South China, had more than 10,000 tea drinks shops.

Market Trend

Consumers in the tea drinks industry tend to be younger and younger, and the proportion of post-90s and post-00s in the main consumer group of new-style tea drinks is close to 70%. Consumers have put forward higher requirements for the health of tea drinks, driving the popularity of healthy drinks, such as fresh milk tea has become a force to be reckoned with in the tea drink industry. Meanwhile, tea drinks brands are actively expanding and adapting to market changes by opening up franchises, lowering price strategies, launching new brands and exploring 24-hour business models.
